Journalism and Crossmedia: Conceptual Foundations and Points of Intersection
Abstract
Solutions journalism is a relatively new approach in the media that positions itself in contrast to traditional news formats focused on conflicts and sensationalism. The core idea of this approach is not only to report on problems but also to offer possible solutions, analyse successful practices, and foster constructive dialogue within society.
In the contemporary information space, media play a key role in shaping the audience’s worldview. Traditional news often emphasize the negative aspects of events, which can lead to disillusionment, apathy, and increased levels of anxiety in society. In contrast, solutions journalism proposes a different approach — covering not only the problems themselves but also the ways to overcome them.
The main objective of this study is a comparative analysis of solutions journalism and cross-media practices as two innovative directions in modern journalism. The study aims to identify their conceptual differences, points of intersection, implementation challenges, and potential for synergy within the context of digital transformation of the media.
Solutions journalism as a concept emerged in response to growing criticism of traditional journalism, which often focuses on negativity, sensationalism, and conflict. Researchers note that a constant stream of negative news contributes to “news fatigue,” where audiences feel powerless in the face of problems and lose motivation for active civic engagement.
In contrast, solutions journalism seeks not only to identify problems but also to explore successful examples of how they have been addressed. This approach not only informs the public but also inspires action, thereby fostering positive social change.
Therefore, the results of the study confirm the feasibility of further studying the integration potential of decision journalism and cross-media practices, in particular through practical cases, editorial experiments, and interdisciplinary approaches to training a new generation of journalists.
